What is “Golden Milk”? Is it really golden? Let’s see. I have tried it for the first time in India, during my teacher`s training. I was very exhausted after physical practices for more than 6 hours every day. Every single muscle in my body was telling me about their existence 🙂 And then I found  this traditional Ayurvedic drink and it`s just simply miraculous. My muscle pain was gone with the wind, I slept better, and it was simply just so relaxing drinking it every evening with friends. Then decided to learn more about it.

Golden milk benefits

The key ingredient in golden milk is turmeric, which gives its yellow color and antioxidant prosperities. Curcumin, turmeric’s most significant compound, has medicinal properties and is used to reduce joint, muscle and menstrual pain, as well as arthritis, and even treat depression. The reason is that Curcumin is a potent antioxidant and strongly anti-inflammatory. It’s so powerful that it matches the effectiveness of some anti-inflammatory drugs. You probably heard that oxidative damage is one of the mechanisms behind aging and many diseases. The main reason antioxidants are so beneficial is that they protect your body from free radicals. Curcumin can neutralize free radicals due to its chemical structure.

Unfortunately, curcumin is poorly absorbed into the bloodstream. But black pepper can help us with it, it contains piperine, a natural substance that enhances the absorption of curcumin. So It’s very crucial to add a bit of black pepper in our recipe. Ingredients might vary, for example, if you are lactose intolerant, you can replace cows milk with coconut, soy or almond. I’m going to share with you a traditional version of Golden Milk`s recipe.  The recipe requires just 7 ingredients, 1 pot, and 10 minutes of your time.

Golden Milk – benefits

INGREDIENTS:

1 a cup of milk (cow, goat, coconut, soy or almond);

1 teaspoon oil (sesame, coconut, sunflower or almond);

1 a teaspoon of ground turmeric;

1/2 a teaspoon of ground or fresh ginger;

1 stick of cinnamon or 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon;

A pinch of black pepper*;

honey (to taste)**.

(*) – The most important aspects are that the turmeric is cooked and combined with a small amount of black pepper, as the black pepper increases the absorption of the curcumin.

(**): Never add honey to hot drinks, as it loses all its healing properties and it turns to poison.

Mix turmeric, ginger, and cinnamon with milk, then warm on the stove, simmer( do not boil ) for 10 minutes. In the cooled (warm) drink, add honey(**) and oil. Golden Milk is ready!
